Scientists of the Obvservatorio
Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI)
and the Laboratorio de Química de la
Atmósfera de la Universidad Nacional,
visited the area of Golfo Dulce Saturday
morning, to investigate the bubbles
emanating from the waters off the Golfito
coast following this weeks series of
earthquakes.
The experts are taking samples of the gases
that are rising from the ocean floor for
analysis.
The ministra de Salud, Maria Luisa Avila,
repeated yesterday that the gases are not
toxic and do not pose a threat to humans or
marine life, although a thorough analysis
will be made.
The southern zone area of Golfito and the
Panama border was shaken by series of
earthquakes earlier this week, the strongest
with a magniturde of 6.3 on the Richter
Scale, as the Cocos and Panama plates rub
each other.
No casualties or serious damage was reported
notwithstanding the magnitude of the quakes.
Experts say that the depth and distance from
populated areas minimized damage and loss of
life.
Local area fishermen discovered the bubbles
some 4 kilometres off the Golfito coast,
reporting it to officials. However, many of
the locals say the bubbles are common and
have been seen in the area for the last
several decades.
Experts believe, however, that this week's
tremors caused cracks in the seafloor and
are investigating the release of natural
gas, believed to include methane.
