Costa Rica apparently suffered the first
blow in their qualifying match against
Mexico slated for March 28. Costa Rican
futball officials balked when referee Terry
Vaughn was tabbed to officiate the match.
Vaughn, an American referee who officiates
matches in Major League Soccer, was the
referee for Costa Rica's 2007 Gold Cup match
against Mexico. The game was an ugly affair
won by Mexico. Vaughn sent off three Costa
Rican players and booked four others in the
match.
"We are going to send a memo detailing the
previous history we have had with this
official," Costa Rican Football Federation
President Eduardo Li told The Associated
Press on Thursday. "We don't want to reject
him but rather make our previous history
come to light so that everyone is clear the
type of official we've had before."
Vaughn also officiated another rough loss
for a Costa Rican team as he was present in
Saprissa's 4-0 loss at Cruz Azul in a
CONCACAF Champions League match last year.
"Whether it's a coincidence or not, our
national team is always affected by these
decision," Li said. "We don't want the
referee to help us but we don't want them to
be detrimental to us either.
