Taxi Vehicles
Older Than 10 Years May Have To Be Pulled
From Service
Some 8.000 taxi vehicles will have to be
pulled off the road this year with the roll
back of the maximum age of taxi vehicles to
10 years and not 15 as was approved recently
by way of Decreto Ejecutivo.
The roll back means that an estimated 66% of
the national taxi fleet will not be allowed
to be in service, according to Gilberth
Ureña, of the Foro Nacional de Taxistas.
Ureña said that many of the taxi
operators/owners will end up losing their
taxi plates as they will not be in a
financial position to replace their aged
vehicles.
Another point being made by Ureña is the
requirement of all taxi vehicles to have
installed air bags and reinforced structural
frame in the side doors.
The union representative questioned the
adoption of such measures by the Consejo de
Transporte Público (CTP) in a time of
economic crisis in the country.
