Central Bank To Introduce ˘20.000 and ˘50.000 Colones Notes

Costa Rica will have a new paper notes as of next year, principally the introduction of the ˘20.000 and ˘50.000 colones bills and radical change in size, shape and colour of the existing paper bills.

Currently, the Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR) emits notes for in dominations of ˘1.000, ˘2.000, ˘5.000 and ˘10.000.

The first of the new notes will be with the introduction of the ˘20.000 colones note that will be in circulation in March of 2010.

The BCCR says that the total change of all currency notes will be completed by January 2011.

One major change is that each note will also be different in size than the other, the smallest being the note with the smallest domination, the ˘1.000. Each note will also be a different colour, ˘1.000 note being red, while the ˘50.000 note will be "morado" or purple.

For instance the ˘1.000 note will be 67mm by 125mm, incrementing in lenghth to 160mm for the ˘50.000 note. As well, the new series of notes will feature the theme of biodiversity and a new family of personalities, different the current.

Roy González, general manager of the BCCR, said that it is custom to introduce new personalities with the change, but it in now disparage the past personalities.

The new notes will include features for use by the blind and help elders with poor eyesight easily identify the different notes, and include security measures against falsification.

The BCCR explained that the security measures will be on three levels, the first easily identified by the public, the second not easily visible to plain sight and the third a measure exclusive for the Central Bank to identify their authenticity.

The current bills do not count with the third level of security and have been easily copied and falsified.
