Peruvian Indigenous Still Missing
Lima - The situation of 60 indigenous
people who have been missing since the tragic
incidents in the Peruvian Amazonia is one of the
main subjects included in a report by a UN rapporteur in that country.
UN rapporteur for Human Rights Affairs of Indigenous
Peoples, James J. Lenoir Anaya, was informed about
the events in Bagua, where a police repression
against an indigenous protest left 24 policemen and
10 civilians dead.
Bagua's Mayor Luiz Nunez said a total of 60
indigenous people have not returned to their
communities since that day, according to the leaders
of the awajun ethnic group.
He pointed out those missing could be either hidden
to avoid police reprisals or dead.
Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition Nationalist
Party, Ollanta Humala, ratified the need to fully
clarify the events, and proposed the creation of a
commission with the participation of the people's
ombudsman, the Catholic Church, and other social
sectors to guarantee impartiality. |
