Guatemala Miners Protests

Guatemala - The Guatemalan government has a 90-day deadline as of Wednesday, to deal with demands of those who protest the country''s mining activity.

After a two-day mass rally ending in the capital's central zone, people from the San Juan Sacatepequez municipality, department of Guatemala, and other places, reached an accord with authorities.

A delegation from that movement's leaders was welcomed by President Alvaro Colom on Tuesday night. He reiterated the suspension of granting licenses for mining development and exploitation until reaching an accord through national negotiations.

The statesman had publicly stated it shortly before in an assembly of the National Indigenous and Peasant Coordinating Committee.

The main demand is to avoid the private construction of a quarry for mineral extraction and the operation of a plant to produce cement in that zone.
