Americas Summit to Provide Chance for Obama to Discuss Ties With Latin America
Mexico City - The fifth Summit of the Americas in April will provide an opportunity for U.S. President Barack Obama to discuss relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, said.

The summit will be the first multilateral forum of the region in which Obama is likely to participate, Manning said.

"The new leader in the White House (Obama) has enunciated the need for the kind of diplomacy which brings people together," Manning said, expressing belief that Obama "will have the opportunity to interact with his counterparts on issues affecting us all such as the economy, energy, environment and security."

"We are honored that Obama will grace our shores to share, for the first time, his vision and hope for the future of our hemisphere", Manning told the his country's Parliament.

The prospects for a new engagement of the United States with Latin America and the Caribbean must not be downplayed, he added.

Since the global financial crisis goes on spreading its negative effects, Manning said it was time for all to work together to find a solution.

"In a world in which countries are becoming more interdependent day by day, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation more than ever," he said.

The summit, the first to be held in a Caribbean state, will take place in Trinidad and Tobago from April 17-19. The theme of the summit is "securing our citizens' future by promoting human prosperity, energy security and environmental sustainability."
