Colombian Troops to
Ecuador Border
Bogota - Colombia have deployed 27,000 troops to the Ecuador border
to fight crime and drug trafficking, Colombian Defense minister Juan
Manuel Santos said.
The minister on Saturday toured the San Miguel municipality, in the
Putumayo Department on the Ecuador border, to check security
measures in the region.
Seven military boats and a mother ship are operating in the
bordering river.
Santos advocated for restoring diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
Ties were severed on March 1, 2008, following a Colombian raid into
Ecuadoran territory to attack a Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia (FARC) guerrilla base.
According to the Defense minister, both country´s military leaders
should have fluent communications, because, he said, it would be an
essential tool in the fight against crime. |
