Poás Volcano Re-Opened
The Poás volcano was
re-opened yesterday to
receive visitors after
being closed following
the increased activity
after the January 8
earthquake.
Park officials said
yesterday that the
Parque Nacional Volcán
Poás is again receiving
visitors.
Roberto Dobles, ministro
de Ambiente, Energía y
Telecomunicaciones, said
that the park could have
re-opened sooner but
remained closed at the
cuation by the Comisión
Nacional de Emergencias
(CNE) - national
emergency commission.
The minister assures
that the park is
absolutely safe and that
the earthquake did not
cause any damage in the
surround structures nor
the volcano itself.
Dobles said that the CNE
asked for the park to
remain closed as
visitors to the crater
would impede theri
emergency operations in
the area.
"The opening of the park
is very important as
many families depend on
the area's tourism",
said Dobles.
The Área de Conservación
de la Cordillera
Volcánica Central has
said that the colussus
has not reported any
major changes save for
an increased temperature
in the water of the
lagoon, which is now
back to normal.
For security reasons
access to the lagoon
will be restricted as
the trail is remote and
in an emergency access
would be difficult, but
will be re-opened as
soon as the situation
returns to normal,
according to park
officials.
Access to the volcano's
crater is not affected. |
