Mild Earthquake Shakes
Nicaragua
Managua - A
4.6-magnitude earthquake
shook the Pacific coast
of Nicaragua on Sunday,
and there are no reports
of damages or victims so
far.
The quake took place at
08:18 a.m. local time
(1418 GMT) and its
epicenter is located in
front of the Masachapa
resort at a depth of 53
km in the Pacific Ocean,
113 km southeast to
Managua, the Nicaraguan
Institute of Territorial
Studies said.
The earthquake was
caused by the collision
process of the Cocosand
Caribbean tectonic
plates, according to the
institute's report.
On Dec. 8, 2008, the
Nicaraguan Institute of
Territorial Studies
reported several mild
earthquakes which it
said were apparently
caused by local
geological faults.
Active volcanoes are
blamed for the frequent
occurrence of
earthquakes in the
country.
