Colombian President
Pleased With U.S. Award
Bogota - The Colombian
ambassador to the United
States said on Monday
that Colombian President
Alvaro Uribe is pleased
with the award he will
receive on Tuesday in
Washington.
Carolina Barco said the
government of George W.
Bush will award Uribe
the "Medal of Freedom,"
which is the
highest-level civil
award given by the
United States. Uribe
will be the first Latin
American president to
get it.
"Mr. President (Uribe)
arrived in Washington
this noon (Monday) and
the event will be held
tomorrow (Tuesday).
Everything is ready for
the homage, which is
very important. The
award is given to the
people who have
contributed to the
security of the national
interest," Barco told
the local media.
The "Medal of Freedom"
has been given to Pope
Juan Pablo II and
Spaniard opera singer
Placido Domingo, Barco
said. She added that
former British Prime
Minister Tony Blair and
former Australian Prime
Minister John Howard
will also receive the
medal Tuesday.
Barco said that during
Uribe's visit to
Washington, he will meet
with U.S. Secretary of
Defense Robert Gates and
Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice.
The Colombian president
will also meet with his
Mexican counterpart
Felipe Calderon, who is
on an official visit to
the United States, Barco
