Colombia's Fedecafe
Demands US Caricaturist
Bogota - The Federation
of Coffee Growers of
Colombia, known as
FEDECAFE announced
Tuesday a millionaire
lawsuit against US
caricaturist Mike
Peters, for what it
described as an insult
to Colombia’s main
national product.
During a press
conference FEDECAFE
Manager Gabriel Silva
condemned the message
that appeared in a comic
strip in hundreds of US
newspapers, which
associates the
emblematic coffee label
Juan Valdes with the
Colombian criminal
bands.
He announced that
FEDECAFE, after
consulting with their
legal advisers in New
York, will demand Peters
in US, for damage,
defamation and detriment
to intellectual
property.
He indicated they will
sue for us$20 million
dollars and a public
apology in reparation to
the wrong done, because
that kind of caricature
acts against national
dignity, Colombian
coffee reputation and
encourages consumers to
take other drinks.
