Escazú Park and Bajo de
los Anonos Most Insecure
Areas In The Country
The reprot "Informe
Nacional de Desarrollo
Humano y la Encuesta
Nacional de Seguridad
Ciudadana 2004" issued
by the Programa de las
Naciones Unidas para el
Desarrollo (PNUD), says
that the parque central
de Escazú and
surrounding area is one
of the most dangerous
places, especially after
6pm.
Meanwhile "the Bajo de
los Anonos" (also part
in Escazú) is "no man's
land".
The report takes into
account the increase of
the use of drugs in an
area, the lack of police
presence, lack of
preventive programs for
youth, violent acts
committed and
disentigration of the
family unit, as factors
in determining an area
dangerous.
The PNUD report has some
recommendations for the
Municipalidad de Escazú
to reverse the
situation, which
includes more municipal
police officers in the
area and the use of
video surveillance and
alarms, as well as
increasing lighting, a
way for people to file
complaints easier and to
promote cultural and
acrecreativetivities,
especially for the
residents of the Anonos.
According to the PNUD,
the ten more secure
cantones are: Dota,
Acosta, Poás, Palmares,
Oreamuno, Guatuso,
Alvarado, Valverde Vega,
Puriscal and Alfaro
Ruiz, while the more
insecure cantones La
Cruz, Nicoya, Montes de
Oca, San José, Parrita,
Aguirre, Santa Cruz,
Puntarenas, Limón,
Liberia, Corredores and
Garabito.
Robberies and break-ins
are the most common
crimes committed in many
areas, followed by
domestic violence and
homicides.
