Politicians Cannot Use
Public Spaces For Their Propaganda
The Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) has warned candidates
seeking their party's nomination for the 2010 presidential elections
that they cannot litter public areas like utility poles, trees, bus
stops and buildings with elections propaganda.
The reminder came from the TSE as political parties gear up their
electoral machines to choose a leader.
The Partido Liberacion Nacional (PLN) and the Partido Accion
Cuidadana (PAC) are the only two with an announced leadership race,
while the other parties like the PUSC and the ML have yet to
announce any plans.
Ony the PLN and PUSC parties hold public conventions to select a
candidate.
This year the PAC party leadership led by its founder Otton Solis is
being challenged by Epsy Campbell, although it is still unclear if
there will be an open convention. The other political parties don't
hold any public elections of the their leaders.
Notwithstanding, the TSE reminded all political parties and
candidates of Article 85 of the Código Electoral (Elections Code)
that prohibits the littering of public areas with political
propaganda.
The fine for violation is between 6 and 15 basic salaries and up to
30 days jail.
The TSE said it will be keeping a close eye on the politicians.
