Puntarenas Carnaval Awaits
You With Open Arms
The 10 day Puntarenas Carnaval that
began on Thursday (Feb 12) is in full swing, with a program loaded
with lots of music, arts, parades, and of course beautiful women in
skimpy bikinis. Frommer's calls the Puntarenas carnival the "queen"
or Costa Rican carnivals.
Part of history of the Carnaval is selecting a queen. Friday night,
18 year old, María José Somohano Berrocal, from nearby Roble, was
crowned the 2009 title, beating out eight other competitors.
Today include a fishing tourney, the Gran Regatta, volleyball on the
beach, gymnastic aerobics and lots and lots of music on all three of
the stages set up on the Paseo de los Turistas.
All week long the festivities begin at 2pm. For a program of
activities, visit the Carnaval's official website,
