Peruvian Miners Dismissed Amid Global Financial Downturn
Lima - At least 8,000 Peruvian
miners have been dismissed in recent months as metal prices drop on
sagging demand amid the global financial crisis, a labor union
leader said Tuesday.
Mining and iron-steel companies in Peru dismissed the workers after
metal prices dropped on the international market, said Luis
Castillo, general secretary of the Mining, Metallurgic and
Iron-Steel Federation.
He said the mining workers were making a great contribution to the
national income, but their current working situation was "a serious
problem."
Many of the 130,000 workers linked to mining production are doing
their jobs at heights of 4,000 meters above sea level or in
mineshafts of great depth, and have to work between 12 and 14 hours
a day.
