Tránsito Intensifies Patrols On
Highways
In eight days the 2009 public school year begins and to ensure that
the back to school and the end of the summer vacations. To ensure
the safe return of vacationers, the Policía de Tránsito has
announced an intensive campaign that increases their presence on the
nation's roads.
According to a press release by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT), 250 Tránsitos or almost one third of the current
force, will be deployed on the main highways and areas of high
traffic accidents.
The areas of great attention by the Tránsito are those leading to
the Central Valley from the beaches and resorts, where some 130
spotchecks will be posted along the routes to catch drunk drivers
and overcrowding of vehicles, not only for private vehicles but also
those used in public transport.
The Policía de Tránsito, in their efforts, are also calling on all
citizens to report any dangerous situation they may spot on the
roads. A special hotline - 800-TRANSITO (800-8726-7486) - has been
set up to take calls.
Tránsito officials will also be on the look out for those vehicles
that do not have their current "marchamo" paid, whose drivers will
be exposed to a ¢10.000 colones fine and the confiscation of the
license plates.
Save for the drunk drivers - those drivers who are caught with more
than 0.75 blood alcohol content - who are being escorted directly to
the jail cells, the current fine for traffic violations are between
¢5.000 and ¢20.000 colones.
