Brazil To Aid Hostage Release
in Colombia
Rio de Janeiro - Brazilian helicopters
arrived in Colombia's western city of Cali on Wednesday ready to
receive the sixth and last hostage to be released by the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) this week.
Sigifredo Lopez, a former Colombian congressman who was kidnapped in
April 2002, will be released by the FARC rebels on Thursday, at an
undisclosed location in southwest Colombia. He is the sole survivor
of a group of 12 congressmen murdered by the FARC in June 2007.
On Sunday, the FARC released three police officers and a soldier,
and freed on Tuesday former Meta Department governor AlanJara, who
had been held for more than seven years.
Brazil has provided two helicopters to transport released hostages,
as well as members of the International Red Cross who have
coordinated the release with Colombian Senator Piedad Cordoba.
