Panamanian Exporters Attentive to US Crisis

Panama -  Panamanian exporters are closely following the evolution of the economic crisis in the United States, as sales to that major trading partner might fall.

According to statistics published in the newspaper La Prensa, the US market assimilates about 45 percent of Panamanian exports, estimated at nearly 500 million dollars.

Representatives of the Panamanian entrepreneurial sector admitted that some companies have been affected by a drastic decrease in sales, amid a situation that has had a negative impact on such sectors as fishing, agriculture and construction, among others.

As an example, they said that the firm Aluminios de Panama reported a large drop in exports to the United States, so it is exploring business opportunities in Central America. A similar situation is affecting fresh fish suppliers, as consumption has decreased and the demand for frozen fish has been reoriented.

However, processed marine food is cheaper than fresh fish, thus affecting suppliers.
