Belem, Brazil - The international economic crisis and
alternatives to the neoliberal model are on the table Saturday at
the World Social Forum (WSF) in this city until February 1.
Among issues are environmental degradation and the responsibility of
the so-called First World in the indiscriminate exploitation of
non-renewable natural resources.
Parallel to this event are seminars and workshops to examine
specific questions on the situation of farmers, gender
discrimination, and disrespect of native peoples' rights.
More than 100,000 people from 150 countries, are attending this
meeting in northeastern Brazil, under the theme "another world is
possible."
Started in 2001 as an alternative position to the World Economic
Forum in Davos, these forums have been held in the cities of Porto
Alegre, Bombay, Caracas, Berlin and Nairobi. |
