Arias Says He Is "Cansado"
Costa Rica president,
Oscar Arias, said during
his Independence Day
address that he was "cansado",
tired of the hounding by
the press and critics
and that he should be
left to govern as he
still has "important"
things to accomplish
during his term.
"I will be honest with
you, I am tired. I am
tired of trying to do
urgent things and be
confronted with
obstacles", said Arias
during his independence
day speech in front of
government leaders,
diplomats and citizens
in a ceremony held at
the Parque Nacional.
"I am tired of proposing
measures that met with
adversity just because
they come from the
government. I am tired
of giving explanations
to those who do not want
an explanation but
rather to uncover
corruption on my part. I
am tired of governing a
country that believes
that criticizing
everything makes us
freer, when in fact we
become ungovernable",
said Arias.
"The president can be criticized
and has to give
explanations every day
or the other option is
to go home; however,
Arias, in addition to
not be thankful, he
forgets that he lost the
election by a small
margin and it was he
would asked Costa Ricans
to vote for him", said
Jorge Eduardo Sánchez,
legislator for the
Unidad Social Cristiana
(PUSC) party.
Union leader Albino
Vargas expressed his
feelings on the Arias
statement by saying "he
continues full of pride
and arrogance and he
does not accept that his
ideas are not the only
valid ones to govern a
country as complex as
Costa Rica".
Arias, in his speech,
said his heart is tired
but is ready to continue
his fight for the causes
that brought him back to
politics.
Political opponents
attribute Arias'
condition to the
decision by the Sala
Constitucional with
respect to the Tratado
de Libre Comercio (TLC)
- free trade agreement
with the United States -
the controversy
surrounding the bond
purchase by China and
diversion of funds
donated by Taiwan.
