Construction of New
Stadium Off, Now On
Again
The Sala Constitucional
or Sala IV as it is
often referred to,
yesterday voted in
unamity to reject the "recurso
de amparo" (writ of
Habeas Corpus) filed by
a group of nine people
against the building of
the new Estadio Nacional
en La Sabana (national
stadium). A week earlier
a decision by the court
halted construction of
the new stadium when the
writ was filed.
In a vote of 7 to 0
taken at 11:17am Friday,
the plans to to start
construction of the new
stadium next month can
continue with the only
provision that the
Icoder include an area
to plant more trees in
the park.
The writ was presented
on October 3 by a group
headed by former
ministro de Cultura,
Guido Sáenz, who
objected to the
construction of the
stadium without an
environmental impact
study. The Sala IV
accepted the filing on
October 6 and
immediately ordered a
halt to the construction
plans while it reviewed
the filing, which takes
on average some three
months.
However, the court made
their decision in
"record timing",
according to statistics
of the Poder Judicial
(Judicial authority).
The decision to halt
construction was met
with heavy criticism,
while yesterday's
decision caused
satisfaction not only in
the general population
but also in governmental
circles and sports
enthusiasts.
The new stadium, which
will come in at a cost
of us$72 million dollars
and paid for by the
government of China,
will sit on the site of
the old stadium that
stood since the the
early 1900's and will
have a crowd capacity of
35.000, almost three
times the old, but just
about as much (albeit
almost none) onsite
parking.
