Gasoline Price Drops At Midnight
The first significant price drop in gasoline prices will take effect at midnight tonight when the price of a litre of diesel fuel will drop ¢76 colones, super gasoline ¢14 and Plus 91 (regular) ¢13.

At the stroke of midnight, the price of fuel at the pumps will go from ¢736 to ¢722 colones a litre for super, from ¢721 to ¢708 for regular and from ¢726 to ¢650 for diesel.

The drop is based on the approval given by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep) last month and published in the official government publication, La Gaceta, today.

The price drop will also effect the cost of natural gas used in most kitchens in the country, as the price drops 17%.

The regulador general, Fernando Herrero, explained that the drop is based on a modification on the method used to fix fuel prices and the drop in natural gas.

Today, the fare for using the "urban" commuter train will also drop. The one way fare for a trip between the Universidad Latina and the Estación del Pacífico or the Estación del Pacífico to Metrópoli III (Pavas) will be ¢200 colones, or ¢400 colones for a complete trip from the east end to the west end.

However, not all the news is good today. The Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AyA) - water and sewer utility - will be charging 26.6% more to its customers for water consumption. The price adjustment, according to the Aresep, is to allow the utility the funds it needs to complete a number of projects to better the infrastructure.

The 26.6% increase will apply to all bills for the remainder of 2008 and 2009, then increase 8.11% in 2010 and 7.4% in 2011.
