Salvadorian Expats
Meet at Home
San Salvador - Dozens of
emigres will attend the
Sixth International
Convention of
Salvadorians of the
World, scheduled from
November 25-27 in their
homeland, organizers
said.
The meeting will take
place at the Jose Simeon
Cañas Central American
University under the
motto "Human Capital of
the Diaspora: Beyond
Remittances", according
to a communique
published in La Prensa
Grafica daily.
The university's Human
Rights Institute (IDHUCA)
and the United Nations
Development Program (UNDP),
among other
institutions, sponsor
the meeting.
IDHUCA spokeswoman Gilma
Perez said the meeting
would be attended by
delegations of
Salvadorians who reside
in Sweden, Spain and
Canada, as well as in
the US cities of Los
Angeles, Washington,
Arlington (Virginia),
New York, San Francisco
and Miami.
Official statistics show
that 2.8 million
Salvadorians, who sent
$3.69 billion to their
homes in remittances
last year, live abroad.
That sum of money
accounted for 18.1
percent of the country's
Gross Domestic Product
and 92.8 percent of
total exports, the
newspaper reported. |
