Government Guarantees No
Shortage Of Rice
The government's
decision to fix the
price of at ¢17.981
colones for a 73.6 kilo
sac has left a sour tast
in the mouthes of the
Corporación Arrocera
Nacional (Conarroz) and
the samblea de
Productores de Arroz,
who has said they will
not import any more rice
until the government
raises the price to
¢21.980 colones.
Connaroz is the
organization in charge
of estimating the amount
of rice needed for
national consumption and
the importation of an
adequate supply.
However, the
vice-minister of Economy
assures that there will
not be a shortage of
rice in the country.
Eduardo Sibaja said that
the although Oscar
Campos, president of the
rice producers
association, said that
they will not import
rice, Connaroz has a
commitment to purchase
32.000 tonnes, part of
the 162.000 tonnes of
rice supply estimated
for 2008-2009.
The vice-minister said
that the country has a
supply of 40.000 tonnes
of rice and with the
32.000 tonnes on the
way, there is enough
supply to the end of the
year.
