Sardinal Residents
Protest Against Aqueduct
Project
Residents of Sardinal,
Carrillo, in Guanacaste
were out in a peaceful
protest yesterday to
stop the construction of
a water pipe that would
supply water to a number
of tourism projects at
nearby beaches including
Playas del Coco and
Playa Hermosa.
The protestors rejoiced
after the construction
company in charge of the
mega project decided to
halt construction,
saying it will resume
work following an
environmental impact
study is made by the
Acueductos y
Alcantarillados (AyA)
and the Ministerio de
Obras Públicas (MOPT).
Last week, at the
Defensoría de los
Habitantes (Ombudsman's
office), in San José,
the defensora Lisbeth
Quesada, met with AyA
and MOPT officials,
representatives of the
Municipalidad de
Carrillo and area
residents and it was
agreed to halt the
project while the impact
study was completed.
On Tuesday residents and
police clashed as
residents argued that
they were being left
without water if the
project is allowed to
continue. |
