Correa Calls To
Establish New OAS
Without U.S.
Participation
Ecuador's President
Rafael Correa Saturday
called on to establish a
new organization of
American states without
U.S. participation to
eliminate its
interference with
dealing with regional
affairs by the Latin
American countries.
Correa made the remarks
when addressing a Quito
television. He said
Latin America needs to
establish an
organization of American
states only comprising
the Latin American
countries.
The Ecuadorian president
said the United States
exerted the pressure on
presidents of many Latin
American countries when
they expressed concerns
over the diplomatic
crisis involving
Ecuador, Colombia,
Venezuela and Nicaragua.
He said U.S.
interference made the
Organization of American
States (OAS) solve the
crisis slowly, saying
that it took the Rio
Group summit "just one
day to resolve the
crisis, and look how
long the OAS is going to
take."
Correa highly praised a
peaceful solution of the
diplomatic crisis among
the four countries,
adding that it has
opened an entirely new
era for Latin America.
The 20th Rio Group
summit concluded Friday
in the Dominican
Republic. In a statement
approved by the summit,
Colombia apologized for
the raid across the
border with Ecuador and
pledged not to take
similar actions.
