Peru's Trade Affected As
Bolivia Closes Its
Border Bridge
Bolivia's decision on
closing its border
bridge with Peru has
affected Peruvian trade,
President of Peru's
Central of the Districts
of Puno (CUPB) Abraham
Cauna said Sunday.
The measure of closing
the bridge adopted by
the Bolivian government,
aimed to combat
smuggling, has affected
small traders in Peru,
Cauna said.
Cauna urged the Peruvian
government to help
facilitate exchange of
merchandises, otherwise
the situation will be
worsening in the Puno
region, which borders
Bolivia.
Bolivia has recently
strengthened the fight
against smuggling to
Peru, sending troops to
control the waterway
traffic in the border
area early this month.
Smuggling has become a
major problem in the
Bolivian economy while
Peru is the largest
destination of Bolivian
products. The two
countries share 1,131 km
of border.
It is estimated that
each year Bolivian
products worth more than
300 million U.S. dollars
enter Peru in an illegal
way.
