Rains Leave 46 Dead,
Many Injured And
Homeless In Colombia
Continued rainfall since
January has left 46
people dead, 63 injured
in Colombia, with
250,000 homeless and
five missing,
authorities said
Thursday.
The rains have caused
landslides and floods in
247 municipalities of
the country, especially
in the northwest, north,
northeast and central
west, an expert with the
National Emergencies
Directorate told local
radio station "Caracol."
The worst-hit places are
Antioquia, Bolivar,
Cesar, Santander and
Risaralda," said the
expert.
Although the rains have
diminished in the last
two days, "they are
expected to continue in
the low watersheds of
the Cauca and Magdalena
rivers," the experts
said.
Rescue workers have
remained on alert as the
above two rivers could
flood large zones of the
country's northern
region.
The Colombian government
has announced several
measures to aid the
victims in their efforts
to reconstruct their
homes and resume
production, including
offering them loans to
buy new houses.
