NAM Supports Chavez's
Stand Against U.S.
Officials from 118
countries attending the
15th Non-Aligned
Movement (NAM)
conference in Tehran
have voiced their
support for Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez's
stance toward the United
States, Venezuelan
Foreign Ministry said on
Wednesday.
The NAM expressed its
concerns for the
aggressive stance of
U.S. President George W.
Bush's administration
toward Venezuela, saying
the Venezuelan people
have the right to choose
their government and
economic system, the
ministry said.
The meeting, which
concluded on Wednesday,
discussed future actions
and strategies of the
NAM.
Representatives from 118
members, 15 observer
members and eight
international and
regional organizations
including 60 foreign
ministers attended the
conference.
The meeting also
discussed issues such as
food security and
European immigration
policies.
The NAM, founded in
April 1955, is an
international
organization of states
considering themselves
as bloc-free and is
aimed at ensuring "the
national independence,
sovereignty, territorial
integrity and security."
It has 118 member
countries, most of which
share a critical view of
the U.S and the
developed world in
general.
Iran assumed the
chairmanship of the
conference Tuesday.
