Mother's Day Retail
Season in Full Swing
August is the second
best month for
retailers, as the get
ready for Mother's Day
on August 15, topped
only December's
Christmas buying season.
For weeks the deals on
appliances and home
furnishings have been
appearing in the major
retail stores around the
country, that include
offers with instant
credit and small
bi-weekly payments.
Mother's Day in Costa
Rica is a national
holiday, a day to honour
all mothers, celebrating
motherhood generally and
the positive
contributions of mothers
to society.
Retailers see the
Mother's Day as way of
cashing in as the
tradition of giving
mothers gifts on this
day has converted it
into a bustling retail
season.
This year Mother's Day
falls on a Friday and
unlike the other
holidays falling during
a weekday that are moved
to the following Monday,
Mother's Day this year
does not.
For the last two years
Mother's Day had
followed the move to
Monday, but protests
forced legislators to
amend the law to allow
the holiday to be
celebrated on the day
that it falls.
Traditional gifts for
mother are television
and stereo sets, washing
machines, microwave
ovens and other
appliances, computers,
urniture and in some
cases vehicles.
