13 Cameras To Keep An
Eye On Romeria
Thirteen cameras will
keep an eye on "romeros"
over the next couple of
days when as many as 2
million people are
expected to be in
Cartago to pay homage to
the Virgen de Los
Angeles.
Members of the Fuerza
Pública (police),
Policía de Tránsito
(traffic police) and
Policía Municipal
(municipal police) will
all join efforts to keep
the romeros safe in
their walk from Tres
Ríos to the Basílica de
los Ángeles.
Although pilgrims come
from all over the
country, some make from
outside of Costa Rica,
authorities are
concentrating their
efforts on the part of
the route that amasses
the greatest number of
people as they may their
way east from San José.
This year all types of
sales have been banned,
the only group permitted
to have a stand are the
Cruz Roja (Red Cross) to
provide first aid
attention.
Authorities say that the
cameras and the strong
security is to avoid
thefts and assaults by
criminals, some of whom
are believed to be
pretending to be romeros.
That is were the cameras
come in, as a team of
experts from the Fuerza
Pública and the
ministerio Público to
monitor the cameras and
detect suspicious and
criminal activity.
The monitoring unit is
based in the Fuerza
Pública mobile command
unit parked in front of
the Basilica, from where
units can be dispatched
to problem locations. |
