Marchers Protested
Same-Sex Couples Rights
Dressed in white
t-shirts, some 20.000
people jammed Paseo
Colón, in San José,
yesterday to express
their views in
opposition of a
legislative proposal to
allow same-sex couples
the rights of spouses.
The march began at 8am
in front of the Hospital
San Juan de Dios and
ended shortly before
noon at the La Sabana
park.
Organied by the
Federación Alianza
Evangélica Costarricense,
people from all over the
country took part in the
march.
"We are making a call to
legislators against the
proposal that is
currently before the
Legislative Assembly,
that would consent the
union of homosexual",
said Reynaldo Salazar.
The Comisión de Derechos
Humanos de la Asamblea
Legislativa (Legislative
Assembly's commission on
human rights) is
studying a proposal that
would legalize same-sex
unions. The proposal was
made in 2006 from
various gay community
groups.
If the proposal if
approved would give gay
couples the rights of
survivorship, to dispute
communal property and
the right to receive
alimony. |
