Recope Says Fuel
Consumption Down 5%
According to the
Refinadora Costarricense
de Petróleo (RECOPE) -
state monopoly on oil
refining and gasoline
distribution - said that
gasoline consumption
during the month of June
dropped 5%.
Recope said that is sold
74.203 less barrels this
June compared to June
2007.
A drop of 12.46% in
diesel consumption was
the single largest,
while regular gasoline
consumption dropped
4.6%, though the
consumption of super
gasoline increased by
9.8%.
The drop in consumption
is being credited to the
government's expansion
of the vehicular
restrictions of San José
during the week which
has forced many to leave
their cars at home to
take public
transportation to get to
and from work and in
some cases forming car
pools with co-workers.
The expanded vehicular
restrictions that went
into force last Thursday
may be in jeopardy with
the appeal filed with
the Sala IV
(Constitutional Court)
by a citizen alleging
that the restrictions
are infringing on his
right to freely
circulate San José and
to earn a living, as the
restriction do not allow
him to get to his
clients and placing his
job at risk.
The Sala IV has yet to
hear the appeal.
Others say that it is to
early to tell the effect
of the vehicular
restriction and the
lower consumption can be
attributed to the high
prices of the product.
