Price of Salvadoran Food
Basket Up
The price of food in the
family basket in rural
El Salvador was
increased 24 percent in
the last few weeks, said
La Prensa Grafica
on-line edition Monday
in San Salvador.
The Salvadoran
Foundation for the
Economic and Social
Development assures that
in a year the price of
corn tortillas rose by
20 percent, rice by 45
percent, French bread by
41 percent and beans by
60 percent.
Despite soaring prices,
the bimonthly bond
received by some
households living in
extreme poverty through
a government program
called Red Solidaria has
not changed its value of
30-40 dollars, the paper
said.
A Salvadoran rural
family needs us$4.22
dollars to cover its
basic meal daily.
According to a
comparative analysis
carried out by the
Center for the
Consumer's Defense, the
urban basic food basket
cost us$128.19 dollars
in May 2004, while in
January 2008 it cost
us$159.90.
In rural areas, in this
same period it went from
us$93.29 to us$118.8
dollars.
