Condor Link Investigated
The Guatemalan Human
Rights Attorney's Office
reported a possible
connection between the
former National Police
and the South American
military regimes that
implemented Operation
Condor.
After investigating the
NP archives, discovered
here in 2005, codes
similar to those from
the other countries were
found, Prosecutor Sergio
Morales pointed out.
He said he would travel
to the United States
next week to verify if
the codes are similar to
those used in South
America.
"In addition to the
codes, we also found
their meaning and, for
example, 303 meant
death," Morales told a
news conference.
The codes were contained
in a large number of
telegrams exchanged by
high-ranking police and
military officers,
proving that the NP was
subordinated to the
military at the time.
The documents are part
of a 90-million-page
archive, five million of
which have been
digitalized.
Operation Condor was a
plot carried out by
South American
dictatorships -
Argentina, Chile,
Brazil, Paraguay,
Uruguay and Bolivia -
resulting in the
assassination or
disappearance of
thousands of opponents
in the 1970s and 1980s.
Dozens of thousands of
Guatemalan leaders and
members of popular,
trade union or farmer
organizations, as well
as members of political
groups opposed to
military regimes, were
abducted and executed at
the time. |
