Nicaraguan Lakes
Threatened by
Contamination
Nicaraguan scientists
and institutions
expressed their concern
Thursday for the level
of contamination of
major aquatic reserves,
a subject ignored by
previous
administrations.
Alarmed specialists told
dailies of the danger
threatening the Great
Lake of Nicaragua (Cocibolca)
and Lake Xolotlan
(Managua).
Specialist David Rios
said Lake Cocibolca,
with 3,190 square miles,
receives 90 percent of
the country's
hydrographical flux,
which increases the
threat from the
tributaries bearing
great amounts of
industrial, chemical and
agro-chemical wastes.
Ometepe, the largest
Nicaraguan island on the
lake, with 171 miles and
two volcanoes, is
extremely vulnerable.
He also pointed out that
Lake Xolotlan has been a
victim of contamination
for almost 100 years.
