Peru, Fujimori Trial on
Hold
The civil part of the
trial against former
Peruvian President
Alberto Fujimori accused
the defense team of
obstruction on Monday,
since the absence of a
Fujimori lawyer caused
the suspension of the
session until Friday.
Carlos Rivera and Ronald
Gamarra, defenders of
the families of the
victims of two massacres
analyzed in the judicial
process, agreed that the
absence of Fujimori was
a dilatory maneuver by
his defense lawyer Cesar
Nakasaki.
Nakasaki said he was not
present at the trial due
to a stomach illness
that obliged him to go
to a clinic, and so the
court suspended until
Friday.
Rivera said the
suspension was
unnecessary since the
other two defense
lawyers could have taken
over the defense without
interruption of the
trial, and warned that
if he does not appear in
the next session, the
court will have to
assign a substitute.
In the suspended Monday
session, the testimonies
by journalists Edmundo
Cruz and Humberto Jara,
who investigated the
murders perpetrated by
the paramilitary group
Colina, and published
statements by former
members of this illegal
armed group were to be
heard.
The suspension coincided
with revelations on
death threats to former
Colina members if they
testify against Fujimori
in the trial.
Fujimori s former
intelligence advisor
Vladimiro Montesinos and
former Peruvian Army
chief Nicolas Hermoza
were also called as
witnesses.
The prosecution is
seeking a sentence of 30
years in prison for the
