Public's Help In Curbing
Bad Bus and Taxi Drivers
During the holidays bus
and taxi drivers are
also under the watchful
eye of the Policía de
Transito (traffic
police), who are asking
the public to report
abuses and irregularity
with the service they
are receiving.
One such call ended up
in the driver of a
Lumaca (San Jose -
Cartago) service being
arrested by Transito
officials when he was
driving under the
influence of alcohol.
A breathalyzer test
revealed a 1.92 blood
alcohol content reading
and was immediately
placed under arrest and
take to the courts for
processing.
Under the new Ley de
Transito, drivers with a
reading of 0.75 and over
are no handed out a fine
and a warning as it was
in the past, but
beginning last Tuesday,
are immediately handed
over to a criminal court
and can face from one to
three years prison.
In addition to the
driving under the
influence, this is a
time when bus and taxi
drivers take advantage
of the higher demand and
in some cases and areas
lack of units serving
the public to extort
more money from
passengers by charging
greater than the
established fares.
This occurs with
frequency on buses to
and from the beaches and
resorts, where the
demand during this week
and next is very high.
Authorities are asking
the help of the public
by reporting incidents
to 911 or 800-TRANSITO
(800 8726 7486).
It's not my fault
"It's not my fault, the
other driver (a woman)
hit me", a drunk driver
told Transito officials
(traffic officers) while
being handcuffed for
being behind the wheel
while under the infuence
after being involved in
an accident.
The driver of the
vehicle admitted that he
had been drinking, but
denying that the
accident was his fault,
was upset that he was
being hauled off to jail
and not the driver that
hit him. The other
driver had not been
drinking according to
the breathalyzer test.
