Announces Combat Against
Price Speculation
Montevideo - Uruguayan
President Tabare Vazquez
vowed to fight against
food price speculation,
in order to protect
citizens from the
international crisis,
local media reported
Wednesday.
"We are going to work
hard to fight against
any kind of speculation
or monopolization of the
food, which could raise
the price of the basic
products," Vazquez said
as quoted by the daily
"El Observador".
Vazquez vowed to keep
the inflation rate at
the previously-promised
level of three percent
to seven percent.
The retailer inflation
rate in Uruguay has rose
to 8.18 percent during
the first 11 months this
year.
The president said his
government will take
"necessary measures" so
the impact of the
international crisis
"does not have to be
suffered by the people."
Despite the crisis,
Uruguay is not in
recession and it will
make a three percent
growth in 2009, said
Vazquez.
The unemployment rate in
Uruguay dropped to a
historic minimum of
seven percent in
October.
