No Vehicular Restriction
Of San José For the
Holidays
Beginning Monday
(December 22), the
vehicular restrictions
of San José will be
suspended to the end of
the year, to allow
shoppers unrestricted
access to the downtown
core for the Christmas
holiday season.
The Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT)
said the suspension will
continue until January
4, 2009.
The MOPT restricted
weekday access to San
José when gasoline
prices were high, taxing
the government's
financial resources to
make purchases of oil
products before it could
be resold to consumers.
The vehicular
restrictions were also a
way to reduce weekday
traffic in San José.
The relaxed
restrictions, however,
do not apply to vehicles
over 6 tons from
December 28 to January 4
between 2pm and 9pm.
The suspension of the
restrictions will also
allow Tránsito (traffic)
officials to be
reassigned temporarily
to patrols of vacation
routes, as this is a
time when many head off
for the beaches and
resorts.
