Guatemala Spreads Cuban Method Yo Si Puedo
Guatemala - The Cuban method literacy Yo Si Puedo, (Yes I Can) will be extended in the Guatemalan national territory, starting from January 22 of the municipalities considered today among the poorest in Guatemala and it will be taught in Spanish, mam and quiché languages.

That program allows to learn how to read and write in hardly seven weeks, it began to be applied in this country in 2007 and has already taught more than 1, 200 people, political consultant of the Cuban Embassy Santiago Feliu informed to Prensa Latina Saturday.

Only in this month of December, 144 Guatemalans of different ages graduated in the municipalities of Santa Catarina Pinula, Pastores and Cobán, he specified.

It was in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, in the southern department of Escuintla, where the method began in this country, a novel system based on the combination of letters and numbers.

"The experience was very pretty because we could interact with very poor people that needed to learn and there the village, named El Naranjo, was declared as the first free territory of illiteracy", the professor Noel Rodríguez added.

In accordance with the teachers, the method has many advantages regarding others because its form of applying is interesting, the time of learning is very short and comes from known things to those ones which are ignored.

In Guatemala, the index of illiteracy is about 30 percent and the current government's disposition is to reduce it at least down to 12 percent.
