Festival de la Luz Saturday
Nine floats, ten
marching bands and eight
groups of cheerleaders
will be performing for
an estimate one million
people for this
Saturday's "Festival de
la Luz" in San José.
The annual parade will
begin at 6pm from the
Gimnasio Nacional at the
east end of the Sabana
park and will move
through Paseo Colón,
Avenida Segunda and end
at the Plaza de la
Democracia.
The majority of the
activity will be centred
on Paseo Colón and
Avenida Central, where
sponsors and television
stations will be setting
up their stages to
provide additional
entertainment,
information and
television coverage of
the biggest event of the
year.
For those who have never
attended a Festival de
la Luz, it is a must
see.
To offer the crowd
protection, the Fuerza
Pública will have one
hand 700 uniformed
officers, who will
concentrate on problem
areas of the past and a
mobile command centre.
Traffic control will be
provided by 150 Tránsito
officials, who will
block off all vehicular
access to the downtown
core hours prior to the
event.
Marvin Jiménez, director
de Tránsito de San José,
said that his officers
will be out at 1pm to
start closing off Paseo
Colón and Avenida
Segunda and begin to
divert traffic away from
the downtown core onto
alternate routes.
However, the road
closure of the autopista
Próspero Fernández
around the Gimnasio
Nacional will occurr
Friday night beginning
at 6pm, the area were
all the floats will be
parked, as well as the
several hundred metres
of road from the Leon
León Cortés to the
Gimnasio Nacional.
Traffic from the west,
from areas like Escazú,
Santa Ana and Alajuela
will all be diverted
unto the Circunvalación
through the Hatillos or
La Uruca.
Jiménez added that tow
trucks will be on hand
to remove any and all
vehicles parked along
the parade route or the
parallel routes like
Avenida 1 and owners can
pick them up on Monday
when the Tránsito lots
open for business.
The parade will also
affect buses and their
stops.
