Fast Food Chains
Expanding In The Coastal
Areas
There was a time that
living at the beach
meant having to do
without or travel to San
José when it came to
shopping for a variety
of foods and goods.
However, that is all
changing.
Today, residents and
visitors to Puntarenas
and Guanacaste can now
enjoy the selection that
the Wal-Mart chain of
stores and Auto Mercado
have to offer. Kentucky
Fried Chicken (KFC),
Subway, Burger King,
Church's chicken and
Papa John's are all
present in Jacó and
Liberia.
Wal-Mart, owner of the
Más x Menos, Pali, Maxi
Bodega supermarkets, has
a presence in several
beach communities,
competing with Auto
Mercado with its high
end selection.
The Auto Mercado at
Plaza Herradura in Playa
Herradura is one fo the
flashiest and modern
supermarkets, serving
the Los Sueños and Playa
Jacó community.
Tamarindo also now
boasts an Auto Mercado
in a community that
lacked a big
supermarket, where
residents had to travel
an hour to Liberia for
any major shopping.
Although Más x Menos has
had a presence in Playa
Jacó for many years,
Wal-Mart added a Maxi
Bodega at the main
entrance to Jacó. In
fact Más x Menos was
probably the first ever
large supermarket to
open its doors on the
coast.
Mega Super is following
the foot steps of
Wal-Mart and Auto
Mercado to establish a
presence in the coastal
communities.
In Liberia the fast food
court at the at the
corner on the
Interamericana has been
a source of nourishment
for resident hungering
for fast food and
visitors too timid to
try the local cuisine.
Nearby several other
fast food operations
have joined the trend.
Playa del Coco is also
fast becoming a market
for the chains, now
boasting a brand new
Auto Mercado, who is
seeing Guanacaste, in
particular the canton of
Santa Cruz, as a good
market catering to a
growing number of
foreigners living and
visiting the area. |
