Medina Murder Trial in
Final Stage
The long trial of the
accused of the murder of
journalist Parmenio
Medina is almost at a
close with prosecutor
Guiselle Rivera making
her closing statement
yesterday, asking the
court for a prison term
for Catholic church
priest Minor Calvo and
businessman Omar Chávez.
Calvo and Chávez are
accused of being the
masterminds behind the
assassination of 51 year
old Medina in July 2001.
Medina, a Colombian born
Costa Rican journalist
was the producer of an
investigative radio news
show "La Patada",
exposing the doings the
then widely popular, but
now defunt, Radio María,
which was run by Calvo
and Chávez.
Medina had received a
number of death threats
and was finally gunned
down on July 7, 2001, at
point blank as he was
arriving home.
The murder trial began
in 2005.
Rivera in her closing
statements told the
court that the murder
was to "shut up" a man
for telling the truth as
Medina was getting ready
to expose both Calvo and
Chávez of embezzlement,
who are alleged to have
hire a person or persons
to kill the radio
personality.
Seven other men are
accused in the case and
the prosecutor has
requested a prison term
for each.
The defense attorneys
will now have a chance
to make their closing
arguments and the trial
ending with a verdict in
a few weeks.
Both Calvo and Chávez
each face a 51 year
prison sentence .
