Two Women Shot In Less
Than 24 Hours in
Separate Incidents
Two women are battling a
life and death struggle
after being shot, in
separate incidents, by
their former sentimental
companions who each took
their own lives
afterwards. The
incidents occurred
within 24 hours of each
other.
The first incident
occurred Thursday night
in La Uruca, in San
José, when 47 year old
Blanca Díaz Muñoz was
shot in the head by her
former boyfriend Luis
Alberto Padilla as she
was leaving work at a
local bakery. Padilla
shot Muñoz in the head
critically wounding her
before taking his own
life. The incident
occurred on the sidewalk
in front of the bakery
when Muñoz was headed
for home with a male
co-worker.
Muñoz is in critical
condition at the
Hospital México and
under close observation.
Less than 24 hours
later, in the area of
Batán de Limón on the
Caribbean coast, a bank
security guard shot his
wife in the head when
she came to demand
alimony payment from
him.
Katia Villanueva
Valverde, 29 years of
age, and mother of two
children, was shot in
front of the Banco
Nacional de Batán, where
her husband, Orlando
Pérez Jimenez, 39 years
of age, from which she
was separated.
Jimenez, after shooting
his wife, pointed his
revolver on himself and
was admitted to the
Hospital de Limón in
critical condition where
he later died, while his
wife was taken to the
Ministerio de Seguridad
hacia Base 2 in Alajuela,
and later transferred to
the Hospital Calderón
Guardia and is under
constant care.
So far this year 14
women have been killed
despite the adoption of
the Ley de violencia
doméstica (domestice
violence law), that
calls for strict
punishment for abuse of
women by men.
