Peaceful Nation
Colombia is one of the least peaceful
countries in the world, according to the Global
Peace Index, created by the Australian
philanthropist Steve Killelea and compiled by
the Intelligence Unit of The Economist, which
assesses both the “domestic and external” peace
of 121 countries.
Out of the Latin American nations studied,
Chile, Uruguay, and Costa Rica are acknowledged
among the safest around the world.
Among 24 factors studied, the Index includes
violence, organized crime, and military
spending. Norway tops the ranking, followed by
New Zealand, Denmark, Ireland, Japan, Finland,
Sweden, Canada, Portugal, and Austria. Iran is
at the bottom, just like Israel, Russia,
Nigeria, Colombia, Pakistan, Lebanon, and the
Ivory Coast.
