Venezuelan legislature grants Chavez special presidential powers
Venezuela's legislature, the National Assembly, on Tuesday approved the so-called Enabling Law, which grants President Hugo Chavez special powers for 18 months to enact a series of measures by presidential decree.

The law gives the president authority to remake laws for "the construction of a new, sustainable economic and social model" in order to "achieve equality ... in the distribution of wealth."

The enabling law covers 11 areas, including transformation of state institutions, economic and social matters, finance and taxation, citizens' security, justice, national security and defense.

Chavez was sworn in for a new six-year term as president of Venezuela on Jan. 10.
