Promise of Jobs A Scam
A group of 35 unemployed found
themselves making line at the
Organismo de Investigación
Judicial (OIJ) in Cartago to
present formal charges against a
company that had offered them
work, but in reality were being
scammed.
The affected group found out the
harsh reality when the showed up
for work at the appointed time
and place Monday morning, when
to their surprise the guard at
the Parque Industiral de Cartago
told them that he knew nothing
of the work or the company.
According to the affected, they
had responded to an ad in the
local newspaper that was looking
for janitorial workers and were
asked to deposit ¢8.000 colones
(us$15.50) into a bank account
to cover the cost of the uniform
to be used on the job.
The potential employees were
given a date, time and location
to start work, but their
illusions of starting a new job
shattered when learning of the
bad news.
The case is now in the hands of
the OIJ, who is being asked to
quickly locate those responsible
for placing the ad so that they
can get their money back and
stop others from falling victims
of the scam.
