Panama Canal Works
Create New Jobs
Earthworks at the Panama
Canal will generate
1,525 jobs, according to
estimates released on
Sunday by Minister Dany
Kuzniecky, who is in
charge of the
enlargement of the
inter-oceanic waterway.
President Martin
Torrijos himself called
the people to attend the
event to inaugurate the
works on Sept. 3, when
former US President
James Carter and other
Latin American heads of
State are expected to be
present.
The local company CUSA,
in association with the
Brazilian firm Odebrecht,
won the
41-million-dollar tender
to excavate in the area
known as Cerro Paraiso.
Kuzniecky said leveling
works in Cerro Paraiso
would generate 300
direct jobs, adding that
1,525 employments will
be created in total.
During the first stage
of the works, 7.4
million cubic meters of
earth and rocks will be
removed, and 146
hectares will be
cleared, the minister
told the newspaper
Critica.
He pointed out that 3.4
kilometers of a road
would be relocated, as
well as 12 high-tension
towers.
The total budget to
enlarge the Panama Canal
is 1.25 billion dollars.
The third set of locks
is scheduled for
completion in 2014. |
